Directions for profitable Reading the Holy Scriptures. Direct. 2
Remember that it is the very law of God which you must live by, and be judged by at last. And therefore read with a full resolution to obey whatever it commandeth, though flesh, and men, and devils contradict it. Let there be no secret exceptions in your heart, to baulk any of its precepts, and shift off that part of obedience, which the flesh accounteth difficult or dear.

Thanks for the inspirational passage from Baxter, Chris. By God’s grace may we obey the Lord with joy rather than as a burden and with double mindedness.
You’re welcome, Tom. I couldn’t have expressed it any better. We obey the Lord with Joy because of His great grace for us, not as a burden. Thank you for your comment and I hope you have a great day!
Thanks, Chris, and have a great day yourself!
Thanks, Tom!
Thanks for sharing these words of wisdom Chris. I find them convicting and challenging, unlike much of what is written these days.
You’re welcome, Elizabeth. It is so true that it is hard to find written materials like this today. There is an almost endless supply of quotes from Christians in the 16th-19th centuries and I’ve mostly been quoting puritans from the 17th century.
Every 5th post I will continue to post Richard Baxter’s “directs” (directions) on reading the Bible. All 10 of them are good and I will eventually put them all together in one post. His instructions would be great for any new or seasoned Christian in how to approach reading the Bible.
Thank you for your comment and I hope you have a great day!
“though flesh, and men, and devils contradict it” … Amen to that. May His grace help us! Thank you for this, Chris.
You’re welcome, Cathy, and thank you for your comment. I liked that part of the quote, too!
