Christian Genocide in Nigeria

I’ve been watching Nigeria for years now and have posted about this problem more than once before. Recently, many small news sources complained that this horrific situation was receiving no mainstream news media coverage. It is now hitting the mainstream and many of you who are reading this may know about the persecution of Christians there. A few years ago, in one year, over 4,000 Christians were killed and, as far as we know, no other country came close to these numbers. This year is not over yet and I’m hearing that up to 7,500 Christians have been killed there this year. A Nigerian leader has said that 7,500 is way too high and that the number is more likely to be in the hundreds. With Nigeria’s past record, I think the number is much more likely to be in the thousands. People at the highest level of our government know of this situation and are concerned. It is good to see men in our government discussing this topic.
My goal here is to ask for prayers for our brothers and sisters in Nigeria. Please pray that God would give the Nigerian people strength through the persecution they are experiencing.

Chris, this is so terrible. Thank you, for sharing. I was in a nearby African country in the 1980’s- Burkina Faso (was Upper Volta then). Spent almost 3 months, living with a missionary family on the edge of the Sahara. While there, I fell in love with the people. I have heard that things are very bad for Christians there now, too. West Africa will always be dear to my heart. Will pray.

Yes, Nigerian officials avoid discussing numbers of killed believers this year but according to estimates by the aid group Open Doors (whom I’m sure you know), 4,998 Christians were killed in Nigeria in 2023. We know that number is pretty accurate and I remember blogging about it back then. No other country came close to that number of terrorist killings of innocent Christians.
It is so terrible. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. Our Christian brothers and sisters living in these terrorized areas are beautiful people. I know of a husband and wife who were missionaries in that part of the world years ago and they loved the people as you do. Thank you so much for your prayers!

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Chris. What a horrific situation to live in a country that can’t or won’t protect Christians from persecution and murder. I will be praying.

  4. Chris, thank you for sharing. I’ve known about this but somehow other world issues have been hitting the headlines and people would need to pray fervently for their brothers and sisters in that land. It’s horrific beyond words what Christians are facing in Nigeria.

You’re welcome, Elizabeth, and thank you for your comment. It is sad to hear that Christians are being persecuted in many places in our times. I heard that China just started cracking down on Christians and some have been put in prison. The numbers in Nigeria are tragic. May God give them strength as they face such a ruthless foe.
