O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

December 17, 2021
Michelangelo’s Second Coming painting as found on Art Now and Then

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” Perhaps many Christians are yearning for the second fulfillment of these words in the year of 2021. It is an old song with roots that go back centuries. It has quite a history. Yet, the words echo many of the thoughts of believers worldwide in our day. Part of the song has a somber tone which denotes a request of God throughout the ages:

“Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death’s dark shadows put to flight.”

But then there are these words:

“Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Shall come to thee, O Israel.”

It is the promise hinted at back after man had sinned and fallen short of the glory of God in the book of Genesis (3:15). He was to come the first time to ransom mankind from its fallen nature. It is what we think of this time of year. He will come a second time to right all wrongs and usher in eternity.

The Text of the Hymn

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory o’er the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Dayspring, from on high,
And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heav’nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Adonai, Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s height,
In ancient times didst give the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Perhaps no other group can take this old Latin text and create a Southern U.S. version of this song as well as The Petersons.

And here is the more traditional version:

May God cause your heart to be thankful for the fulfilled promise spoken of in this song and to long for the second coming of our Emmanuel.

Israel Prepares for Passover 5778

March 22, 2018

Seder – in Judaism a ceremonial meal with prescribed ritual reading of the Haggadah* observed in Jewish homes on the first night or first two nights of Passover

The following is a letter I received from a Christian “friend” in Israel who has asked to remain unnamed. I thought some of you might be interested in some of the practical things that go into the preparations for Passover in Israel.

Shalom!!

Happy Holiday! “Hag Sameach” literally means ‘holiday happy’ in Hebrew.

Even though Pasach (Passover) doesn’t start until the Eve of March 30th, the main greeting here in Israel now is “Hag Sameach.” Today, as I was at the grocery store, I could see the shelves being emptied where the things with ‘leven’ used to be. They let the things sell out and will not buy anything with leven in it until after Pasach. So I could not buy my soy milk today; they are already out. Anyway, everyone is preparing, cleaning their homes (probably where ‘Spring Cleaning’ came from) and washing their cars. The price to wash your car is now 50 shekels instead of 40 shekels. $2.90 more because of the holiday. I found out when I washed my car today!

It’s an exciting time to be in Israel!

Also, Christians in the ‘Holy Land’ and from around the world will be celebrating Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. I took (a) picture on a Palm Sunday where people were celebrating by waving Palm branches and singing in their own languages as they walked the path Jesus (Yeshua) took as He rode the donkey into Jerusalem.

May our Lord bless you as you remember His love for you during this amazing season. “Hag Sameach” Hoping you have a blessed holiday!

Nisan, the first month on the Jewish calendar (according to the Torah), coincides with March-April on the civil calendar, which marks the beginning of the spring months. On the first day of Nisan, God instructed Moses, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months, the first of the month of the year” (Exodus 12:2).

This month we celebrate the 8-day holiday of Passover, from the 15th through the 22nd of Nisan. It commemorates the Jewish people’s miraculous redemption from slavery in Egypt, and the birth of the Jewish nation. We will not see a year change for the Hebrew calendar until September 10th 2018, 1 Tishrei 5779, the Rabbinical New Year.

In Israel everyone is preparing for the coming celebrations, it is during this time that the Jewish people are looking to God and remembering His blessings. He brought His people from slavery to their homeland, where He will be glorified. This is a wonderful time for us to be praying for the Jewish people to come to know His love for them and for us to seek His blessings in our own lives.

Shana Tovah (Have a Good Year)

My comment:

Some of you will be waving palm branches this Sunday as a reminder of our Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem. Christians remember the resurrection on a daily basis but it is important to know about the last week of Jesus’ journey here on Earth. Each of the gospels spend quite an amount of time on it so it must be of great value.

All Christians should be praying for the peace of Israel. In the past five days:

A Muslim resident plowed into a group of soldiers, killing two and critically injuring two others.

A 32-year-old father of four who worked as a security guard at an excavation site in the Old City, succumbed to multiple stab wounds to his torso.

The IDF destroyed two terrorist tunnels leading from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Netanyahu said, “The time has come for the International Community to realize that the financial aid given to Hamas is being used underground.” The people continue to suffer in the Gaza Strip due to lack of medical aid, electricity and water, which their Government is expected to supply.

An Israeli man was injured after he accidentally entered a Palestinian Authority-controlled town near Beitar Illit south of Jerusalem. The man, who was driving on a motorcycle, took the wrong exit, and found himself in the Palestinian town. He was attacked by rock-throwing terrorists and suffered a head injury. IDF forces were dispatched to the scene and transported him to the hospital.

There are, of course, larger forces at work plotting the destruction of the tiny little nation that God has an everlasting covenant with. Jews continue to return to the land in spite of the dangers they face from surrounding nations.

It is amazing to watch.

One thing is clear; Israel will never be destroyed. It is one thing you can take to the bank. Uh..I’m not so sure about how secure that is these days though.

Jerusalem…Entering the Old City

IDF on the northern border were on high alert Monday – following a weekend when
warning shots were fired twice by an Israeli tank at Assad regime troops inside
Syria who were attempting to fortify positions in a buffer zone on Israel’s border.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) continues inciting school children through their
curriculum. The Knesset Christian Allies Caucus sponsored the Jerusalem Chairman’s
Conference where one of the speakers was Itimar Marcus of the Palestinian Media
Watch. While leaders from many countries including the United States were in
attendance, Marcus shared the actual material being read and studied by ‘Palestinian’
students even those in East Jerusalem. The curriculum is paid for by the UN and
some of that money comes from American Tax Payers. The picture was a
program on a PA children’s show, which aired May 23rd, 2017. How can the PA want
peace, when they teach their children to hate their ‘peace partner’?

In a draft resolution, the Arab League accused Iran and Hezbollah, which it considers
to be a terror organization, of supplying weapons and missiles to various terrorist
militias. “We are not declaring war on Iran at this stage,” announced Arab League
Secretary-General, but we are alerting the Security Council to possible future steps.”
A Jerusalem court ruled that the Palestinian Authority is liable for the 2001 shooting
attack in which three Israelis were murdered. The court ordered the PA and the
terrorists to pay a total of 62 million shekels (around 20 million dollars) to the
victims’ Israeli family.

Saudi Arabia ordered Palestinian Authority President Abbas – to either accept an
Israeli-Palestinian peace deal being put together by the Trump administration,
or resign. (IND Weekly)

Washington tells Palestinian Authority to join Israel in Peace Negotiations or the
office of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) will not be recertified
next month.

My comments:

I believe that Israel is God’s prophetic timepiece. The Middle East appears more stressed than ever. Are we nearing fulfillment of Biblical prophecies that we presently don’t understand completely? I continue to watch the tiny nation surrounded by enemies.

JERUSALEM

July 16, 2016

“…and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,
‘The Deliverer will come from Zion,
He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.’” – Romans 11:26

So why is a large part of Israel not Christian at the posting of this brief article?

The answer is written in the verse that precedes the verse above. Romans 11:25 states:

“For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in”

Darrell Mansfield tells the Jews that “Your King is this Man from Galilee” in this song.

I enjoyed Darrell’s walk through the streets of Jerusalem in this 30 year old music video.

Darrell Mansfield was once a young man in search of meaning in life. His search ended at the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ after some difficult times in his youth. This early music video was Filmed on location in Jerusalem, September 1986.

I agree with Dr. J. Vernon McGee that these verses are talking about literal Jews (Israelites). I also agree on his commentary involving these verses:

Romans 11 ‘Thru the Bible’ with Dr. J. Vernon McGee
(Click on #8 if you wish to hear Dr. McGee’s commentary on Romans 11:26…It wouldn’t take long to listen to the commentary on the rest of the chapter, too!)

I am watching the tiny little country of Israel become more isolated from the rest of the world. Many former friends have and are leaving them. I will always be a friend to the nation of Israel because of an everlasting covenant that God make with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I believe that the Bible teaches that God will eventually intervene on their behalf. How He does that remains to be seen. One thing I am not concerned about is the destruction of the Israelites. It will not happen.

Darrell Mansfield’s first appearance on an album with the group Gentile Faith. “Jerusalem” is my favorite song on this album.

Intense Hostility against Preaching in Jerusalem

June 12, 2016

Pastor Jim has posted something very interesting here. One of his comments after the post reads:

“I don’t know why there was the added sounds. I thought it was insightful though of how some Jews today react to the Gospel being preached. I support the state of Israel to exist but I think Christians must remember that modern Israeli are not necessarily all friendly to the Gospel.”

Today, I was talking with some friends about the United Nations. It has decided to make negative and unequal (in proportion to other nations) statements about the small little country. It appears that the entire world is against Israel.

In spite of all these negatives, one very important thing is true. Here is a portion of the discussion on FB today regarding this truth and it’s nonacceptance at the U.N.:

“Look at the continued pressure they put on God’s covenant land and people. It is unwise. “Cursed be those who curse you, And blessed be those who bless you.” This is an everlasting covenant that came from God to Abraham and continued through Isaac and Jacob.”

“It is quite a thing that the Jews are being regathered in Israel. I don’t think there’s another example like it in history.”

I am like Pastor Jim. I support Israel because of an everlasting covenant that God has made. I think they have a great leader currently. He is very friendly towards Christians unlike the Jews in this video.

A gospel presentation should always be balanced. It should include the ramifications of the Law along with the Good News. Hell is a real place and when we talk about it, it must be in a balanced manner.

I would like to add this little story. When I was in Jr. College, I was a member of the Christian Club. Our goal was to share the Gospel on campus. We held weekly meetings and we were quite visible on campus. We did the best we could, as young people, to balance the scriptures. There is the Law. There is the Gospel.

One day, a man none of us had ever seen, walked on campus with a large sign that said something about “Burning in Hell.” He was very unbalanced. There was no gospel about him. It was all Law and we feared he would undo much of what we had tried to accomplish. We divided up. One group prayed while the other tried to explain his imbalance to him. Christians were much more concerned that day than any non-Christians. The argument that day was between Christians and this man, whatever he was. It was Christians who chased the guy off in the end.

After watching this video twice, I think there is a balanced view shared here. I was not there for the entire day but I will say that I wish I had been. I have never been to Jerusalem but I know I will be there someday and that it will look quite different than the Jerusalem in this video. If I had been there for the entire day, I could give you a better view about the balance in the message. Based on the video, however, I appreciate these men of God and their willingness to face possible harm in order to reach the lost.

The Domain for Truth

This video is rather intense of a recently evangelism in Jerusalem by American preachers doing open-air preaching.

I am stunned at the spitting going on by the Israeli unbelievers.  It is pretty gross.  Then there’s the grabbing and the harassing.

It reminds me of what our Lord and Savior faced.

Pray for the salvation of those who were there.  I pray that Israel would come to know her Messiah: Jesus Christ.

WEEKLY WRAP-UP FOR 2016-5-7

May 8, 2016

I learned a lot this week. Half of the posts had to do with the ongoing “Child Protective Service” problem in so many countries. Sadly, there appears to be an intentional effort by many to break up a most important institution in our world: the family.

THIS MAN WANTS TO GO ON A HUNGER STRIKE BECAUSE HIS SON WAS TAKEN BY THE UK’S C.P.S.

I gave a speech the the Watchmen of Garland County on Monday about this problem. YOU CAN SEE IT HERE.

YOU CAN SEE A MAP OF THE WORLDWIDE PROTEST OF 4/16/16 HERE.

YOU CAN SEE WORDS FROM AN EXPERT PROFESSOR ON THE SITUATION IN NORWAY HERE.

THE MOST READ POST OF THE WEEK IS HERE.

I took another article from Dan’s “The Battle Cry” regarding the false prosperity gospel that is so popular. YOU CAN SEE IT HERE.

Hildi Doelitzsch is an outspoken advocate of children’s and parent’s rights. HERE IS A BEAUTIFUL SONG THAT SHE HAS WRITTEN AND PERFORMED HERSELF.

IF YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF THE FIGHT OVER THE GOLAN HEIGHTS IN ISRAEL, I’VE POSTED TWO PROPHECY UPDATES THAT INCLUDE THE SUBJECT HERE.

NO WEEK WOULD BE COMPLETE WITHOUT A POEM FROM DEBORAH ANN.

Another full week of teaching and blogging. I spent time at three different schools this week, one that I rarely get to. Here was my favorite “Joke of the Day” for this week:

JD Farag’s and John Haller’s Prophecy Updates: 16/5/1

May 7, 2016

Although the Pre-Trib view is diminishing in popularity, it is alive and well. I am not dogmatic on the subject. I have posted this because I think it would be interesting even to those who don’t agree with JD’s Pre-Trib position. Israel is facing resistance from many different forces. This I believe is an indication that the Second Coming of Jesus is near. CR

I have listened to John and have never really gotten his take on a position regarding the rapture. He does a prophecy update weekly because, like JD Farag (and me), we are watching as Jesus asked us to do. CR

Ecclesiastes: Chapter 12 Verses 13-14

April 22, 2016

Rob Barkman started this blog in April of 2010. It is the same month my blog went from being a “News Blog” to a blog solely devoted to Christianity. He has done a wonderful study here as far as I can tell as I’ve read only a few of his posts on Ecclesiastes. If the rest are like the ones I’ve seen there are some good Bible Studies here. His studies have been enjoyed by many whom I trust theologically. This post covers the final two verses of Ecclesiastes. Enjoy. CR

SIH TOTT ICONWhat Is Your Life If Not Lived For The Lord? (Part 41 )

INTRODUCTION:

Solomon addresses himself as “the Preacher”.   He is the one that will proclaim the spiritual truths of God to those in his nation and to Christians throughout time.

Keep in mind, Solomon learned these truths by trying to find the meaning to life through experiencing all this world has to offer.  Solomon was uniquely suited to learn these lessons and share these truths with the people of God…

First of all, very few men possess sufficient wealth and power to be able to sample all this world has to offer (1 Kings 10:23).

Secondly, only Solomon and a few others throughout time, have been universally respected causing his teachings to be taken very seriously and thoughtfully by all (1 Kings 4:30-34).  (Keep in mind, even Christ Himself and His teachings were rejected by…

U.S. and Russia team up to Seek Israel Pullback from Golan

April 19, 2016

Photo from the Debka File

Photo from the Debka File

(Click on the map to enlarge it.)

Checking out rodi’s blog I saw this map and was intrigued. The article accompanying the map states:

“…Israel’s top political leaders and military commanders were stunned and shocked last weekend when they found out that US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to support the return of the Golan to Syria.”

Wow. If the Debka report is correct, and I have found it very dependable in the past, things are getting mighty interesting. If Israel were to lose the Golan Heights, their ability to protect themselves would decrease dramatically.

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s has declared that “Israel will never withdraw from the Golan.”

Mr. Netanyahu knows how important the Golan is to Israel’s survival.

Mr. Putin comes from a country where chess is very important. He is a master tactician. Just last week he “tested” the United States by allowing Russian jets to “buzz” a U.S. destroyer. I think that Mr. Putin thinks that Mr. Obama is a cupcake. Would Mr. Putin allow U.S. jets to “buzz” a major military ship, threatening the entire crew, and do nothing? I think not.

As a substitute teacher, I am tested on a daily basis. Having “car duty” after school today, my job was to watch students as they waited to be picked up by their parents. The students are to sit and wait. A few of them weren’t sitting. I asked them twice nicely to sit down like everyone else. A few listened, a few didn’t. I warned, “If you don’t sit down, you will have to go over and stand by the lady (principal) holding the megaphone.” One girl didn’t sit down. I waited for about two minutes and then told her she was going to have to go and stand by the principal. What kind of message would I have sent if I had let her “get by” with not listening to a teacher, which is quite disrespectful particularly because of the way I asked? She would lose a bit of respect for me. This is important as, the next time I ask her to do something, she might listen.

When it comes to strategy, Putin is a knight while Obama is a pawn. Because Netanyahu has helped keep his tiny little country alive this long, his leadership skills surpass Putin’s. Mr. Netanyahu has something on his side that Mr. Putin doesn’t. It is a covenant that God gave to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is an everlasting covenant. Israel will not be destroyed no matter how many enemies attack them.

“Scripture has at least 170 references to the land that God gave to the offspring of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God promised the land of Canaan to the Jews as an unconditional covenant – 55 times the Bible records that God confirmed the gift with an oath. Twelve of those times He stated that the covenant was everlasting.” (1)

Because I believe in the Bible, I believe in the everlasting covenant regarding the land of Israel.

Many Bible scholars think that Russia is mentioned in the Bible. If you want to know more about this, leave a comment and I will explain.

I am not absolutely certain that Russia is mentioned in the Bible but I think it is a good possibility.

I know for certain that Israel will be a major focus, as it already is, in the last days. Many Bible prophecies predict this. Again, if you are interested in these prophecies, please leave a comment.

This story interests me because it appears that Israel is alone in its battle to survive, something many Christian students of prophecy believe will happen near the end of days as we know them.

Iran Deal Increases Chance for Middle East War

April 13, 2016

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted something about the Middle East. My understanding of the Bible makes Israel very important forever. Check out the “New Jerusalem” discussed in Revelation 21. Iran and Russia appear to be “riding high,” creating more tension (if that’s possible) in the Middle East.

Scott Uehlinger is a 20 year CIA veteran and is an expert on Russia and Iran. He discusses American politics, the Iran “Deal,” Russia and Iran, and many other subjects.

I think Greg Hunter and his guests are more accurate than the mainstream news 95% of the time.

I was surprised to see Russian jets fly so close to U.S. naval personnel doing drills on a naval destroyer. It was reported that one jet got within 30 feet of the vessel.

Mr. Putin is not afraid to put our seamen in danger.
