Quotes #37…John Maynard 1600-1665

Christ’s satisfaction and righteousness is the full, perfect, and only cause of justification and pardon of sin, and that no holiness, no duties of the persons justified, help anything at all towards their justification; it is the Righteousness of Christ imputed to them, which maketh up the whole matter of their Righteousness in the sight of God, and covereth all their sins.

Thanks, Chris, for the excellent quote from Maynard. Sadly, the vast majority of people in this world who call themselves “Christians” would disagree with Maynard, believing they are justified by sacraments, obeying the Ten Commandments, and performing good deeds.

You’re welcome, Tom, and thank you for this important comment.

My AI overview states that: “Approximately 85% of the world’s population identifies with a religious group, with Christianity (~2.3-2.4 billion) and Islam (~1.8-2 billion) being the largest, representing over half of all people. Hinduism (~1.1-1.2 billion) is the third largest, followed by Buddhism (~500 million) and various folk or traditional religions.”

This is in the ballpark as I’ve checked other sources which have figures close to these.

Here’s a pew research report that gives similar numbers:

      https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2025/06/09/how-the-global-religious-landscape-changed-from-2010-to-2020/

Catholics are lumped in with the Christian numbers:

“Out of approximately 2.3 to 2.4 billion Christians worldwide, roughly 1.3 to 1.4 billion are Catholic. This means Catholics make up about half (roughly 50% or more) of the total Christian population, representing the largest single denomination within Christianity.”

When it comes to the number of people who believe what Maynard has stated above, you are spot on.

If one considers Catholic theology along with other belief systems where people think they will be going to heaven because of their good deeds, the vast majority of the people on the planet do not believe in the Biblical Gospel message of salvation by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Of course, in our times, there are many in protestant circles who somehow think they will be saved because they have been “good.”

We must continue to put the true Gospel message out there and, like you do so often, make people aware of the differences in the salvation message of the Bible and the one of the Roman Catholic Church which states that: “they are justified by sacraments, obeying the Ten Commandments, and performing good deeds.”
