Bono Meets Eugene Peterson

By Pastor Jim Jenkins

It’s entirely possible to look at something so long that you can’t really see it anymore. For years I have been calling people back to simple faith in the inerrancy of God’s Word. I’ve been patronized, mocked and more times than not, simply ignored.

I completed my doctorate at Fuller Seminary at the height of the Church Growth movement. I was exposed to all the marketing influence, the obsession with numerical growth of churches—and it was there that I was first introduced to the term “Progressive Christian.”

We were required to read the book Marketing the Church by George Barna. Some notables at Fuller at the time were C. Peter Wagner, Bob Logan, Carl George, and Eddie Gibbs. The message that permeated the core of the Doctor of Ministry Degree program was that the Church needed to be run as a business, and that the message needed to be contextualized against the backdrop of the culture.

Today Fuller Seminary rolled out its inaugural video of a new media site FULLER studio. It is a 20-minute piece featuring Eugene Peterson, author of The Message Bible which sold 17,000,000 copies, and the rock star Bono. They are discussing their joint affinity for the Psalms. Accompanying the video is the above picture of Bono with the Petersons at their home in Montana. Bono is lifting his index finger. Many believers would say, “Oh, I didn’t know Bono was a Christian.”

Here is another picture of Bono that more accurately depicts his view of Christianity He is sporting a headband with the COEXIST motto.

I saw a video of one of U-2’s concerts in which Bono is leading the thousands of fans in a song and he begins to speak almost in a whisper, “Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha all the same. Jesus Mohammed, Buddha all the same.” He is pointing with the index finger to the headband.

The rest of the April 4, 2016 article can be found here.

As Mr. Peterson has found it okay to add words to the original texts of scripture, he is not to be trusted in any way. It is quite obvious that Bono’s theology is a bit mixed up, also. This is a very interesting article.

WEEKLY WRAP-UP FOR 2016-5-7

May 8, 2016

I learned a lot this week. Half of the posts had to do with the ongoing “Child Protective Service” problem in so many countries. Sadly, there appears to be an intentional effort by many to break up a most important institution in our world: the family.

THIS MAN WANTS TO GO ON A HUNGER STRIKE BECAUSE HIS SON WAS TAKEN BY THE UK’S C.P.S.

I gave a speech the the Watchmen of Garland County on Monday about this problem. YOU CAN SEE IT HERE.

YOU CAN SEE A MAP OF THE WORLDWIDE PROTEST OF 4/16/16 HERE.

YOU CAN SEE WORDS FROM AN EXPERT PROFESSOR ON THE SITUATION IN NORWAY HERE.

THE MOST READ POST OF THE WEEK IS HERE.

I took another article from Dan’s “The Battle Cry” regarding the false prosperity gospel that is so popular. YOU CAN SEE IT HERE.

Hildi Doelitzsch is an outspoken advocate of children’s and parent’s rights. HERE IS A BEAUTIFUL SONG THAT SHE HAS WRITTEN AND PERFORMED HERSELF.

IF YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF THE FIGHT OVER THE GOLAN HEIGHTS IN ISRAEL, I’VE POSTED TWO PROPHECY UPDATES THAT INCLUDE THE SUBJECT HERE.

NO WEEK WOULD BE COMPLETE WITHOUT A POEM FROM DEBORAH ANN.

Another full week of teaching and blogging. I spent time at three different schools this week, one that I rarely get to. Here was my favorite “Joke of the Day” for this week:

What do you call a salon for sheep? (The student forgot to give me her name)

A baa-baa Shop.

I wish you a blessed week in the Lord.

JD Farag’s and John Haller’s Prophecy Updates: 16/5/1

May 7, 2016

Although the Pre-Trib view is diminishing in popularity, it is alive and well. I am not dogmatic on the subject. I have posted this because I think it would be interesting even to those who don’t agree with JD’s Pre-Trib position. Israel is facing resistance from many different forces. This I believe is an indication that the Second Coming of Jesus is near. CR

I have listened to John and have never really gotten his take on a position regarding the rapture. He does a prophecy update weekly because, like JD Farag (and me), we are watching as Jesus asked us to do. CR

The Soft Prosperity Gospel

May 6, 2016

Another great find by Dan C. of The Battle Cry. My son is a fan of the Ligonier conferences so I have watched them occasionally myself. If you think that if you work hard for God, then He should work hard for you, this is a must read.

“The soft prosperity gospel teaches that if you work hard for God, then He should work hard for you. Many have bought into this lie. We go to church, keep our noses clean, and do whatever extra we can. Then we hope God will do His part and bless us with good kids, a nice house, a steady job, and plenty of money. But what happens when the company downsizes? When a kid starts taking drugs? When the 401(k) shrinks?”

What do you think of when you read the words prosperity gospel? Odds are that your stomach turns a bit as you think about the preachers on television who speak to very large crowds and appeal to even more people in their books. Queasiness is the reaction one should have to the brand of Christianity trumpeted by prosperity preachers. This…

WORDS FOR TODAY – MAY 3, 2016

May 3, 2016

A Father’s Instruction

1 Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father,
And give attention that you may [a]gain understanding,
2 For I give you [b]sound teaching;
Do not abandon my [c]instruction.
3 When I was a son to my father,
Tender and the only son in the sight of my mother,
4 Then he taught me and said to me,
“Let your heart hold fast my words;
Keep my commandments and live;
5 Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding!
Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 “Do not forsake her, and she will guard you;
Love her, and she will watch over you.
7 “The [d]beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom;
And with all your acquiring, get understanding.
8 “Prize her, and she will exalt you;
She will honor you if you embrace her.
9 “She will place on your head a garland of grace;
She will present you with a crown of beauty.”
10 Hear, my son, and accept my sayings
And the years of your life will be many.
11 I have directed you in the way of wisdom;
I have led you in upright paths.
12 When you walk, your steps will not be impeded;
And if you run, you will not stumble.
13 Take hold of instruction; do not let go.
Guard her, for she is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked
And do not proceed in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, do not pass by it;
Turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they cannot sleep unless they do evil;
And [e]they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness
And drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
That shines brighter and brighter until the full day.
19 The way of the wicked is like darkness;
They do not know over what they [f]stumble.
20 My son, give attention to my words;
Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your sight;
Keep them in the midst of your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them
And health to all [g]their body.
23 Watch over your heart with all diligence,
For from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth
And put devious [h]speech far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly ahead
And let your [i]gaze be fixed straight in front of you.
26 Watch the path of your feet
And all your ways will be established.
27 Do not turn to the right nor to the left;
Turn your foot from evil.

Waiting For the Word’s commentary:

GOD the FATHER
Throughout Jesus’ ministry he talked about doing the will of the Father. He said that he was going to the Father and he wanted us to be there as well. Jesus said that he and the Father are one: “If you have known Me then you have also known the Father.” The four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John include many references to the Father and Jesus’ relationship with his Father as well as their desire for us to be part of God’s family in heaven.

Obedience to the Father was the one desire of the Lord Jesus Christ. And if this was His primary goal and purpose, then obedience is most certainly a necessary and essential part of our relationship with God as well.

This scripture from proverbs 4 needs to be read today. There are many reasons why. I bet you can think of 5 good reasons in less than a minute.

SILENT TEARS by Hildi Doelitzsch

May 2, 2016

Hildi has a great amount of compassion. She is a Christian who is involved in the effort to help those who are persecuted in Norway. She has been a solid voice for the innocent from the Christian perspective. I appreciate all she has done.

Why I’m Dumping Christianity Today Magazine

May 2, 2016

If you are supporting Christianity Today Magazine in any way, it is time to stop. Dan makes it clear.

Dan C.'s avatarThe Battle Cry

Through the years I’ve been an on again, off again reader of Christianity Today, often referred to these days as Christianity ‘Astray’. A few years ago I tried another subscription that gave me hard copy and online versions because id seemed like a good deal and after all, there was an occasional article that still contained sound doctrine. When my last renewal came around I opted for just the online version from which it was easier to extract information and save it in digital format for future reference. This week I received my May edition and if I could get a partial refund of the remaining issues due me I would – trust me. Here is a sampling of what CT had to offer:

1. Beyond Bono and Eugene Peterson: The Most Searched and Shared Psalms

Thanks to some earlier advertising I knew this one was coming. Fuller Theological Seminary…

Video Link: New Director’s Cut of Excellent Christian Documentary: “The Real Roots of the Emergent Church”

April 29, 2016

Sherryn posted this awhile back but Elliott Nesch’s excellent documentary is one that every Christian should see. I am relying on “The Narrowing Path” more and more for my discernment information.

The Narrowing Path's avatarThe Narrowing Path

Here is another critically important documentary I urge you to watch and share with others. The film maker, brother Elliott Nesch of Holy Bible Prophecy generously offers this film to watch, download and distributed free of charge. With over an hour of additional material, this well-researched film is an invaluable resource for Christians.

The Real Roots Of The Emergent Church

From the original documentary description:

Because diversity characterizes the Emergent Church movement, it is difficult to paint everyone in the movement with a broad brush. Some have observed that defining the Emergent Church is like nailing jello to a wall. All participants agree on their disillusionment with the institutional church, but do not all agree on where the church is destined to go from here. They share a common concern with many evangelicals over the state of the modern church, especially the mega-church phenomenon and “seeker-friendly” churches. For this reason, many…

Bi-vocational pastors be warned – what you say from the pulpit on Sunday could get you fired from your public sector job on Monday

April 21, 2016

“Bi-vocational pastors be warned – what you say from the pulpit on Sunday could get you fired from your public sector job on Monday.

“Dr. Eric Walsh, a renowned public health expert who also serves as a lay minister, has filed a federal lawsuit against the Georgia Department of Public Health alleging he was terminated for delivering sermons on issues ranging from homosexuality to evolution.”

The article goes on to state:

“He was fired for something he said in a sermon,” Dys told me. “If the government is allowed to fire someone over what he said in his sermons, they can come after any of us for our beliefs on anything.”

Dys, an attorney in the case, is right.

It is a sign of the times.

The Sovereignty of God in the Affairs of Men

April 18, 2016

I like Dan’s view of our “10 minas.” Here is another well-written article from the blogger of The Battle Cry.

Dan C.'s avatarThe Battle Cry

In my opinion, it might be a gross understatement to say that we are living in a time of intense turmoil on nearly all fronts, both nationality and internationally, and in every arena (political, cultural, social), the impacts of which are seen and felt inside and outside of the body of Christ, the church. And of course just about everybody has an opinion about what’s causing all the turmoil as well as possible solutions. If you ask the ‘man on the street’ in ‘Anytown’ U.S.A. which issue is the most important you will get all sorts of answers depending on the demographic of the interviewee.

Add a Christian worldview to the mix and we are faced with all of above in light of all what are provided in scripture that speaks to our time, from Old Testament prophecy through Revelation, and all that the Bible speaks of concerning ‘end times’…
