Quotes #39…John Owen 1616-1683

“The growth of trees and plants takes place so slowly that it is not easily seen. Daily we notice little change. But, in course of time, we see that a great change has taken place. So it is with grace. Sanctification is a progressive, lifelong work (Prov 4:18). It is an amazing work of God’s grace and it is a work to be prayed for (Rom 8:27).” – John Owen

“I do not understand how a man can be a true believer, in whom sin is not the greatest burden, sorrow and trouble.” -John Owen

A sobering perspective on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace.”

Hi Mitch. I’m not sure what you are referring to here. Can you explain a bit more what you mean?

I was referring paricularly to the second John Owen quote. Dietrich Bonhoeffer is known for his statement that “grace is free, but it isn’t cheap.” In his classic book The Cost of Discipleship, he calls us to take discipleship seriously.

  3. I love the thought of grace working slowing in our lives to santify us over a lifetime–and that we can pray for this work to take place in our lives. Thank you for sharing this!
