Quote #40…Richard Baxter 1615-1691 (7)

Directions for profitable Reading the Holy Scriptures. Direct. 6

“Bring not a carnal mind, which savoreth only fleshly things and is enslaved to those sins which the Scripture doth condemn.
For the carnal mind is enmity against God, and neither is, nor can be subject to His Law (Rom 8:7-8). And the things of God are not discerned by the mere natural man, for they are foolishness to him, and they must be spiritually discerned (2Co 2:14); and enmity is an ill expositor. It will be quarrelling with all and making faults in the Word which findeth so many faults in you. It will hate that Word which cometh to deprive you of your most sweet and dearly beloved sin. Or, if you have such a carnal mind and enmity, believe it not, any more than a partial and wicked enemy should be believed against God Himself, Who better understandeth what He hath written, than any of His foolish enemies.

Thanks, Chris, for the encouraging passage from Richard Baxter and for the short biographical video. Yes, we must approach Scripture awaiting to be taught by the Lord rather than perfunctorily or as incredulous critics.

    • Chris's avatar Chris says:

You’re welcome, Tom, and I appreciate your comment. I’m glad you liked the short video and the quote. There are lots of videos on Baxter because he is one of the best known Puritans. He was very prolific.

Thank you for this, Chris. I thank the Lord that when I read the Bible for the first time that he opened my eyes to truth. I knew nothing and the Lord was so gracious to me and gave me understanding and I got saved. I know it doesn’t happen to all in this way. My son I know read at least the gospel of John I think it was but doesn’t know the Lord. We continue to pray for him. He will be 50 years old this summer.

    • Chris's avatar Chris says:

You’re welcome, Cathy, and thank you for this response. It is amazing how powerful God’s Word is and that your eyes were opened so soon when reading it. I will put your son on my prayer list.
May God continue to bless you and your husband in your walk with the Lord.

    • Marianne Haslev Skånland, Oslo, Norway's avatar Marianne Haslev Skånland, Oslo, Norway says:

      Dear Cathy,

As a protestant (I am a protestant too, a Lutheran, though not a very good one) one is concerned about the importance of BELIEF, belief of being taken care of by God without having deserved it through one’s own actions, however valuable and right they may be. But we can also think of what Christ has done for us although we did/do not deserve it: He placed us under God’s protective hand. Belief might make your son harmonious and trustful. But besides how WE think of GOD, how does GOD think of US? Looking at the way we behave and do not understand the implications of what we do, He must surely be generous in his judgment on us to have given us such an individual as Christ to live among us? Perhaps along with your prayers you can leave your son in God’s hand.

The Gospel of John is the latest and maybe does not in the most down to earth way appeal to someone whose way of thinking does not tend in that direction. The Gospels of Mark and Luke, the Sermon on the Mount – with its thought-provoking, unexpected ‘opposites’, and (the) Acts (of the Apostles) are perhaps more likely to give one a sense of the relevance here and now of what one reads. It brings close the very troubled times in the Middle East two thousand years ago. It all resembles much of our trouble today.

  9. Canal mind we shall fight.
Meditating those scriptures is key to move to a spiritual mind.
    Thank you so much
