PEACE THROUGH PREVAILING PRAYER

September 10, 2013

“I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not.” {#Jer 33:3}

There are different translations of these words. One version renders it, “I will shew thee great and fortified things.” Another, “Great and reserved things.” Now, there are reserved and special things in Christian experience: all the developments of spiritual life are not alike easy of attainment. There are the common frames and feelings of repentance, and faith, and joy, and hope, which are enjoyed by the entire family; but there is an upper realm of rapture, of communion, and conscious union with Christ, which is far from being the common dwelling place of believers. We have not all the high privilege of John, to lean upon Jesus’ bosom; nor of Paul, to be caught up into the third heaven. There are heights in experimental knowledge of the things of God which the eagle’s eye of acumen and philosophic thought hath never seen: God alone can bear us there; but the chariot in which he takes us up, and the fiery steeds with which that chariot is dragged, are prevailing prayers. Prevailing prayer is victorious over the God of mercy, “By his strength he had power with God: yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us.” Prevailing prayer takes the Christian to Carmel, and enables him to cover heaven with clouds of blessing, and earth with floods of mercy. Prevailing prayer bears the Christian aloft to Pisgah, and shows him the inheritance reserved; it elevates us to Tabor and transfigures us, till in the likeness of his Lord, as he is, so are we also in this world. If you would reach to something higher than ordinary grovelling experience, look to the Rock that is higher than you, and gaze with the eye of faith through the window of importunate prayer. When you open the window on your side, it will not be bolted on the other.

EVOLUTION AND GOD

September 1, 2013

There are so many reasons why we have gotten away from the truth of God’s Word.  The Evolution issue is a big one.

My son worked very hard in high school to get his college tuition minimized.  He is in his freshman year and is taking a Biology and Physiology class.  Here are a few of the chapter titles in his text:

“How Populations Evolve”

“How Biological Diversity Evolves”

“The Evolution of Microbial Life”

“The Evolution of Animals”

Chapter 14 ( a favorite number of mine) begins with “The Origin of the Species.”

Anyone who has read this blog knows where I stand on this issue.  The Bible says that “God created the heaven and the earth.”  I believe it by faith.  I also believe there is a great deal of evidence to back this belief.  Evolutionists may not always admit it but they must come to their THEORY with a great deal of faith.  This video shows several Biology students being asked very simple questions that they can’t answer.  When they do answer, they have not really dealt with the issue.

SPROUL/STEIN INTERVIEW

This is very interesting interview. The entire movie “Expelled” has been put on YouTube by a Muslim.  I had it here, but I don’t feel right about showing an entire movie without those who have worked so hard on it getting something from it.  HERE is a section of the movie that I’ve shown in another post.

Here is a link dealing with “Intelligent Design:”

There are many other posts on this blog about this issue.  To see them all, click on “creation” in the category section on the right side of this blog.  Here a few of my favorites:

GOD OF WONDERS

EVOLUTION CONTROVERSY’S OUTDATED ONE-SIDED EXPOSURE

IS THE AGE OF THE EARTH A SIDE ISSUE?

DOES A GOOD GOD EXIST?

We need to give our young people the facts and let them come to their own conclusions.  Listen to some of the students in the first video.  They sound brainwashed to me.  I think that man knows that there is a God, but rebellion closes one’s eyes to the truth.

This section of scripture From Romans 1 (Bible Gateway) describes the results of a continued turning away from the truth:

Unbelief and Its Consequences

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

LIFE CAN BRING JOY OUT OF SORROW

August 21, 2013

On the quest to cover stories about the fruits of the Holy Spirit, I discovered this one about Joy.

(HERE IS A RECENT POST THAT I THOUGHT DESCRIBED the fruit named LOVE.)

The plan is to go through all of the fruits of the Holy Spirit and then start over again.

Time after time, I have seen God bring good out of something bad.  This story is a good example.

The story (true by BTW):

By Norma Becker

We have been married for 53 years. Ed and I met while going to university and were married at age 21 – that makes us 74 years old. We now have two children and four grandchildren.

The early years of our marriage were not happy years, but were filled with stresses and strains. We really had nothing in common. Our likes and dislikes were totally different. Our ways of spending money were different. Our ideas of an enjoyable vacation were different. I even lived with the fear that he was going to leave me.

How it all Changed
We moved to Canada from the United States 38 years ago and I started to attend a Bible study. I had always believed in God and knew the Bible was true, but I really didn’t know what it said. I believed I would go to heaven just because I was a morally good person and tried to be kind and helpful to my family and friends.

It was through studying the Bible that I learned I could have a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ. It was this personal relationship that gave me the peace and direction I needed to carry on with life and making the right decisions in raising my family.

I’m not talking about a specific church or religion, but a personal relationship with Jesus. I prayed and asked His forgiveness for the sin of wanting to control my own life, and I asked God to take charge of my life. That decision didn’t mean that my life was going to be trouble free; it meant He was always there to help me through the hard times that came, because I now had a new foundation based on the solid rock of God.

Ed was not interested in spiritual things, so I continued to go to my Bible study but the rest of the time I followed the life Ed wanted to lead; however, I continued to pray for Ed and asked the Lord to do anything that it would take to bring him to know God as I did – even if that meant taking my life – but God had a different plan.

Tragedy Strikes
After I had been a Christian for about ten years, we went through a time of severe testing when our son was in the hospital undergoing many operations to correct the proper drainage of fluid in his brain.

THE HISTORICAL CASE FOR PAUL: A CRITIQUE OF MUSLIM ARGUMENTS

July 14, 2013

I love Muslims.  That’s why I have posted this video.  I wish them to come to know the true Jesus, the One who died, rose from the dead, and is alive today.

I don’t completely agree with everything Keith believes, but his documentaries are outstanding for such a young Christian.

I hope you learn something from this documentary. I did.

God’s blessings..

IS CHUCK MISSLER OR HERESCOPE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ALIEN ISSUE?

July 7, 2013

(3-26-16 Update: Many Christians are spending a lot of time on issues like the one discussed here. Do you agree with the Herescope posts or with Chuck Missler? In spite of all the concerns put forward by the Herescope article, no author’s name is given that I can find. As far as I can tell, the author is the “Discernment research group.” I think an article with so many footnotes, as is found on the Herescope site, should name the author or authors. It is properly footnoted, however, and appears well-researched.)

“As one who was very much caught up in this new wave of thought, I am in a unique position to evaluate this unusual book. I believe this book by Chuck Missler and Mark Eastman may well prove to be the most significant book of our times. It could also prove to be the most critical book you have ever read personally. The conclusions the authors carefully develop may alter your own entire world-view in ways that may significantly affect your personal destiny.”[1]
-By Sarah H. Leslie

This quote is from the same Sarah H. Leslie who helped Ken Silva write THIS POST for Appraising Ministries.  Confused already?  Well, so am I.  HERE is the “about” to Appraising Ministries.  It’s creator, Pastor Ken Silva, is very ill as I write this and needs prayer from the Christian community.  I am a reader of AM and have learned quite a bit from his blog.

So, what is the point of this blog post?  The point is that there is all kinds of speculation going on “that may significantly affect your personal destiny.”

This discussion involves important names like Mr. Missler’s. It is why I think the following Herescope articles are important.  They take a cautionary position when it comes to quoting occult sources without any kind of disclaimer.  After reading the articles, I find myself in agreement with them.

A New Cosmology for the Church-A Book Review

HERE IS THE LINK to the post on a blog called “Herescope” that discusses the disturbing facts about the book pictured to the right. It includes disturbing information like the following:

The Truth:  Many of these sources employed by Chuck Missler in Alien Encounters involve reports from people who have been openly engaged in practices such as “remote viewing”[82] or mediumistic “channeling.”[83] These are occult techniques popular in the New Age Movement that are also related to clairvoyance.[84] While it is true that the U.S. government was involved in many experiments with these occult practices, that does not make any of them credible, ethical, accurate or truthful.[85] Some of the leaders in these experiments were seeking methods of altering the human brain and changing worldviews. This especially includes those at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) such as Willis Harman, who had influence over evangelical leaders to change their eschatology.[86]

Methods of altering the human brain and changing worldviews?  (See a better pic here.)

I am sad to say there is also this quote: In a roundtable discussion about Nephilim at the Prophecy Summit 2012 with L.A. Marzulli, Rob Skiba and Douglas Hamp, Derek Gilbert acknowledges the influence of Alien Encounters:

1:44: GILBERT: “I’m like our twelve-year-old Dachshund, I’ve got the gray on the muzzle on both sides. And to my right, the author of the Nephilim Trilogy, and I must say, along with Chuck Missler’s book Alien Encounters, one of the reasons that I am sitting in this chair tonight, um, also the books Politics, Prophecy, and the Supernatural; The Cosmic Chess Match, and now the Watchers series on DVD—which you here in the audience have seen out on the table outside, please welcome L.A. Marzulli. [audience applause] [7]

The Prophecy Conference, held in Branson, Missouri, was sponsored by Prophecy in the News.  I no longer get my magazine from Prophecy in the News, but it always had interesting articles.  I agreed with some and disagreed with others.  Those who have read this blog know that I have put up podcasts from Gary Stearman, whom I think is a brilliant Bible scholar.  None of the ones I have put up involve anything promoting the occult.  I really like Gary, but some of the company he keeps is questionable. This is the most recent post of Gary discussing the character of Superman:

https://chrisreimersblog.com/2013/06/19/the-comic-book-messiah/

Many of Gary Stearman’s podcasts relate information about the current events in Israel (Here is one from 7/8/13, complete with ad banner, that is an intriguing view of the current situation in Egypt).  I am very interested in Israel, as I believe there will be some kind of conflict there soon (no brilliance needed there). And, of course, it is from Jerusalem that Jesus will reign during the Millennium.

I haven’t put anything up recently because all of the podcasts begin with an ad for the upcoming Prophecy Summit II in Colorado (That has now changed).  Many of the people mentioned in the Herescope article, which I find well researched, will be present in Colorado Springs.

A New Cosmology for the Church, Part 2

*NOTE: (3/26/16) I am reviewing this post since it has appeared in my top 10 recently more than once. The link above no longer exists. In fact, “Part 2” is missing from Herescope’s archives. However, YOU CAN FIND PARTS 3 AND 4 HERE.

Click on the “Part 2” title above and you will see just that.  It is a continuation of part 1.  It should be the July 5, 2013 post.  If not, check the archives. I think Herescope has valid questions and concerns.  Consider the following quote from the post: Under the subheading “The ‘Star People’,” Missler reports at length on a “landmark conference called the “’Star Knowledge Conference’” which was “convened by Lakota medicine man Standing Elk to share secret tribal traditions about the ‘Star People’ (Extraterrestrials) with a prestigious group of prominent UFO researchers.”[54] The footnote for this conference references “Richard Boylan’s Star Knowledge Conference Report.”[55] I could not locate a list of attendees at this conference, but the glowing report in Alien Encounters actually seems to be made in the first person. Did Missler (or his co-author Eastman) attend this Star Knowledge Conference?

You can see more about the George Catlin painting HERE. When I first googled the name of the man who published the conference reports, Richard Boylan, I found his official website[56] which “contains reports, articles, and other information on the Star Visitors, on their starcraft (UFOs), and on the advanced-Human Star Kids and Star Seed Adults so numerous now in our population.” Boylan, who says he is a “retired Clinical Hypnotherapist,” holds some elaborate conspiracy theories about “Star Nations,” and on his website he offers to teach children “Psychic Exercises.” He also posts articles such as “Effects on Human Consciousness and Spirituality of Upcoming Announcement of UFO Reality.”[57] His website had plenty to be concerned about so I kept researching him, especially since Missler covered the Star Knowledge Conference for many pages in Chapter Two.

There you have it.  You can read the Herescope posts yourself and see what you think.  Each have extensive footnotes. As I have stated in previous posts, I do believe there is something going on out there and that it is Satanic in nature (Ephesians 6).  We must be careful, however, that we make God’s Word our primary source of spiritual information.

HERE is another take on Mr. Missler.  I haven’t studied this issue enough to know if I agree with all of it, but I share concerns.

EVOLUTION CONTROVERSY’S OUTDATED, ONE-SIDED EXPOSURE

July 6, 2013

I found this article at the Institute for Creation Research.

As Christine states in her article, there is now better evidence for the Creationist viewpoint.  At the same time, she doesn’t deny that the footprints are important.

That's Me with the Dino Tracks in August of 2004
That’s Me with the Dino Tracks in August of 2004

I have been to the Paluxi River and had my picture taken next to a Dinosaur footprint.  Unfortunately, the human tracks were not visible, but this picture shows clearly that the dino tracks are there. The picture was taken at the Dinosaur Valley State Park in Texas.

It is very close to Dr. Baugh’s Creation Museum where this picture was taken:

At Dr. Baugh's Creation Museum
At Dr. Baugh’s Creation Museum

An important book about the subject was published in 1980.  It was called “TRACKING Those Incredible DINOSAURS” and was written by John Morris, son of the founder of ICR.

Although ICR has backed away from the evidences found in this book, it is filled with eyewitness accounts of man and dinosaur footprints found in the same strata.  I have the book, and the accounts seem authentic to me.

One example is found on page 13.  During the Great Depression, residents of the area sold prints to make money to feed their families.  James and Cecil Ryals estimated that they quarried approx. 100 dinosaur tracks and about 10 human tracks.  Dinosaur tracks were more desirable and a good one could fetch up to 50 dollars.  The same page details how they went about their excavations.

The Ryals are not the only witnesses.  The book has other examples.

I believe in a young earth.  It is not millions and billions of years old.  I believe that man and dinosaur lived contemporaneously.  I agree that the prints discussed here are not the best evidence for Creationism, but how can one completely discount them?

The Dinosaur Valley State Park in Texas is another showcase for the Darwinian evolutionists if one reads the signs at the park.  In reality, it is evidence for Scientific Creationists like me.

Paluxy River August 2004 002

=====================================================

by Christine Dao

Appealing to public emotions is a tool employed by politicians, media, and anyone trying to win supporters for a specific agenda. Naturally, such efforts can skew or omit facts, as is often the case in mainstream presentations of the ongoing battle between evolution and creation science. A recent Discovery News feature provides a telling example of this particular ploy.

Published online July 11, the feature is titled “Evolution Controversies: A History in Photos” and includes photographs from the Scopes “Monkey” trial of 1925, a cartoon of British naturalist Charles Darwin with the body of an ape, and a photograph of an exhibit in the Institute for Creation Research’s former Museum of Creation and Earth History in Santee, California.1 Of the ten photographs, two portray what the author says are claims used by creationists as “scientific proof of young Earth creationism”: the dinosaur footprints in Glen Rose, Texas, and a petroglyph in Utah that resembles a dinosaur.

Geologist and ICR President John Morris reported on the Paluxy River footprints in 1976,2 which at the time many creation scientists believed showed human and dinosaur footprints together. However, in light of continuing study, he reexamined the issue and wrote in 1986:

Even though it would now be improper for creationists to continue to use the Paluxy data as evidence against evolution, in the light of these questions, there is still much that is not known about the tracks and continued research is in order. We stand committed to truth, and will gladly modify or abandon our previous interpretation of the Paluxy data as the facts dictate.3

So, Discovery News’ statement that “creationists claim that human footprints can be seen right beside dinosaur tracks”1 is about 25 years out of date. Creation science researchers have moved on, a fact that was omitted from the Discovery News’ emotionally oriented appeal.

In the case of the Utah petroglyph, which Discovery News reported was “just a mud stain” in March of this year,4 ICR Science Writer Brian Thomas wrote:

ICR Senior Science Lecturer Frank Sherwin visited this petroglyph a number of years ago. He commented that although it looked interesting to him, he did not consider it to be as compelling as other historical evidence—such as dinosaur original soft tissues, written or sculpted eyewitness accounts of dragon encounters from all over the world, or certain Bible passages like Job 40—that have convinced him that dinosaurs and man were contemporaneous. The case for creation does not hinge on this one Utah artifact.5

So attempts such as Discovery News’ outdated references that try to place creationists in the same unscientific camp as flat-earth believers6 do not take into account that creation science researchers are willing to examine the data and, if necessary, move on to more interesting and securely justifiable discoveries, such as the soft dinosaur tissues or historical worldwide dragon encounters Mr. Thomas mentioned.7

Discovery News’ bias is further demonstrated by the fact that, although the author was careful to include instances that he thought “disproved” creationist claims, he failed to mention examples of the supposed evidence used to support evolution and long ages that have been debunked, such the classification of Tiktaalik and Pakicetus as transitional forms (aka “missing links”),8 and the accuracy of potassium-argon radioisotope-dating techniques.9

Appealing to public emotions can be effective, because it often does not require the appealers to present all the facts surrounding the topic. However, when the dust settles, the facts will not go away. If they demonstrate anything, anti-science presentations such as the Discovery News feature show that emotional appeals are needed to promote evolution because there is no real science behind it.

HOPE FOR AMERICAN CHRISTIANS

June 30, 2013

“When Your Concern For Your Nation Intensifies” was the title of a sermon I heard today.  The sermon was presented by Pastor Mark Cain of Village Bible Church.

So what do we do about all of the things in our society that sadden us?  Pastor Mark mentioned many of the issues that can make one wonder just where we are headed: lack of morality, abortion, ungodly living arrangements, euthanasia, etc.

The answer Pastor Cain gave was not surprising.  It came from the Bible.  Isn’t that where we are supposed to look for our answers? He found a great answer.

“When your concern for America intensifies, calm that concern through the theology of Psalm 46.”

Here is your answer:

Psalm 46

God the Refuge of His People.

For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah, [a]set to Alamoth. A Song.

46 God is our refuge and strength, [b]A very present help in [c]trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change And though the mountains slip into the heart of the [d]sea; Though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. [e]Selah.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her [f]when morning dawns. The [g]nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He [h]raised His voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.

Come, behold the works of the Lord, [i]Who has wrought desolations in the earth. He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire. 10 [j]Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the [k]nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 46:1 Possibly for soprano voices
  2. Psalm 46:1 Or Abundantly available for help
  3. Psalm 46:1 Or tight places
  4. Psalm 46:2 Lit seas
  5. Psalm 46:3 Selah may mean: Pause, Crescendo or Musical interlude
  6. Psalm 46:5 Lit at the turning of the morning
  7. Psalm 46:6 Or Gentiles
  8. Psalm 46:6 Lit gave forth
  9. Psalm 46:8 Or Which He has wrought as desolations
  10. Psalm 46:10 Or Let go, relax
  11. Psalm 46:10 Or Gentiles (1)

Pastor Mark calls the Psalms “God’s Pharmacy.”  This Psalm shows why.

The Psalm is a song or poetry set in three stanzas.  Each stanza ends with the word “Selah.”  As the good pastor stated, no one knows for certain what the word means.  Many feel that “Selah” is word that means pause.  Pausing is always good for reflection.

Dr. Cain broke the Psalm into two sections.

1. (vv. 1-3) GOD IS (a way of saying “theology”) so personally present there is no reason to fear the cataclysmic chaos.

2. (vv. 4-11) God is so powerfully present He can overrule any national threat.

The conclusion:

“Peace and security are not the absence of threatening circumstances, but the close presence of our powerful, personally involved God.”

I appreciate men who are not afraid to dig for God’s nuggets.  I am fortunate to know Christian leaders of integrity, men who are not afraid to talk about moral issues that enter the political arena, in my community.  I must list a few: Pastor Doug Jones of The First Free Will Baptist Church (and head of The Watchmen of Garland County), Pastor Ken Carney of The First Church of the Nazarene, Pastor Bill Carter of Antioch Baptist Church, and Pastor Larry Spader of Living Faith Church.  These are a few of the twenty or so pastors that I have met in my county who are men of God.  Guys like this are getting harder to find.  I am grateful to God for His faithful servants.

Our nation’s celebration of Independence is not far off.  God has richly blessed our nation in the past.  Psalm 46 is a great scripture upon which to dwell in the present.

OUT OF TUNE

January 25, 2013

By Donald Grey Barnhouse

Several  years ago, musicians noted that errand boys in a certain part of London all whistled out of tune as they went about their work.  It was talked about and someone suggested that it was because the bells of Westminster were slightly out of tune.  Something had gone wrong with the chimes and they were discordant.  The boys did not know there was anything wrong with the peals, and quite unconsciously they had copied them.

So you will tend to copy the people you are most with; you will borrow your thoughts from the books you read and the programs you listen to, almost without knowing it.  God has given us His Word, never out of tune, to set the standard for our song.  Here is the absolute pitch of life and living.  If we learn to sing by it, we shall easily detect the false in all of the music of the world.[1]

ACCELERATING APOSTASY IN THE VISIBLE CHURCH

December 8, 2012

Let me tell you something that I have learned; I know the liberals. I know them well; I was one of them. And they are the most dangerous, insidious, and all-pervading cult that’s loose in the United States right at this moment.

They make the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the Mormons, and all of the Mind Sciences, and the Occult, look like Sunday School teachers. Do you know why? Because these other people are outside the Church; and these devils are in it! And they’re doing it in Jesus’ Name.

They do not believe the Trinity; they do not believe the Deity of Christ; they do not believe the Virgin Birth; they do not believe the vicarious atonement; they do not believe the Bodily resurrection, and they have grave doubts about whether Jesus will ever come back again, and that the Bible is itself the Word of God. Yet I could give you a list of them that infest—and that’s the proper word—infest our theological seminaries; and our church related schools, and our denominations.

And this theological flea infestation is ruining the lifeblood of the Church, which is evangelism. And, you think these are very strong statements; I intend to back them up in—if necessary—excruciating details. For any person who does not know that today in the United States,  and in denominational structures world-around, we are in an accelerating apostasy does not know—I repeat—does not know what’s going on…

We have, for more than one hundred years, been under sustained attack in the United States; in our theological seminaries, church related schools, and our churches. A sustained attack by people, who have the form of godliness, and work within the structure of the Church and have—wherever they have been permitted the opportunity—diluted the Gospel and destroyed the Faith.

They occupy today the chairs in our major theological seminaries; the rulership of our major denominational structures—they maintain boldly and boastfully—“This the Church!” But it’s not the Church if it denies the power of the Gospel; it’s not the Church because it’s got a label…

There’s no such thing as a little bit pregnant. Got the message? No such thing as a little bit pregnant—you are, or you’re not. Well, there’s no such thing as a mild form of cancer; it’s cancer. You don’t get rid of it, you don’t deal with it, it gets you. And we have to deal with these things today; if we don’t, they’ll end up getting what’s left of the Church…

The form of godliness, but without the power; without the sound doctrine of Scripture. And what do we have today as the reigning school of [biblical] interpretation in Protestantism in our theological seminaries world-wide? I’ll tell you what it is: Bultmannian exegesis; named after Rudolph Bultmann, “the demythologizing of the Bible.”

And what did Dr. Bultmann teach, for forty-some years? He taught that you couldn’t rely upon any single thing—virtually—in the entire New Testament record; about Jesus Christ. It all had to be “demythologized,” and then the pieces put back together again. What does Paul say; “they will gather to themselves teachers who will tickle their ears, and the Truth of God will be turned into mythology.”

It’s here. The reigning school of American theologians has progressed from bad to worse. We only have to deal with Harry Emerson Fosdick in the 1920s; but then, it accelerated to Edwin Lewis, Nels F.S. Ferre, Reinhold Niebuhr, and on from Niebuhr to Paul Tillich, and crowned in Rudolph Bultmann. Not one single one of those men believed the historic doctrines of the Christian faith; but they were all the leading theologians of America.

[Episcopal] Bishop [John] A.T. Robinson cannot be unfrocked by the Anglican Church despite the fact that he is a living devil when it comes to Christian theology—denying everything and turning the faith of people into darkness. Do you know why they can’t unfrock A.T. Robertson; because [Episcopal leadership] is heretical as he is. Therefore they can’t touch him…

You can see these people in the cults and the occult if you have any degree of discernment at all because they are outside the church. But how do you see the Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Episcopalian professor of theology? How do you get him in a place where you can find out his theology is? The moment you question him he reverts to orthodox terminology. And then if you press him for the definition of the terminology, he claims you’re being suspicious, bigoted, and unloving.

So the average layman is defenseless, they’ve got to take what comes from behind the pulpit, and recommended by his church authorities, because the moment he opens his mouth, he’s accused of being divisive in the church, unloving and disturbing the fellowship of the faith. When it is the devil behind the pulpit, not the victim in the pew that’s responsible for it…

British theology was corrupted by German theology; by Friedrich Schleiermacher, Albrecht Ritschl, David Strauss. Finally [it moved] to the United States in Walter Rauschenbusch; and from there to Harry Emerson Fosdick, Nels Ferre, Reinhold Niebuhr, Paul Tillich, Rudolph Bultmann—and the school that’s emerging from them today. Where do you think we got the “God is dead theology” from? From historic Christianity; from Christian seminaries?

You did not. You got it from a good, solid Baptist theological seminary known as Colgate-Rochester in New York, which was absolutely orthodox and which sold out to liberalism. And when it did, they embraced the theology of Paul Tillich and ended up with—God is dead. It was called at the time, “the gospel of Christian atheism.” Did you ever heard such linguistic nonsense in your life? The gospel of Christian atheism, T.J. Alhizer, Emory Universtity…

There is a progression that takes place in liberal theology: It begins with a corrupt bibliology, a corrupt view of the nature and the inspiration of Scripture. They have a corrupt theology because once you are picking and choosing from the Bible what you want, your theology has to suffer from it, because your human reason is corrupt… every major theological seminary that has turned from orthodox Christianity began with disbelief of Biblical doctrine. There wasn’t a single exception.

This corrupt Bibliology then lead them to the next step. Their theology began to be touched by it, their view of the Cross, the Virgin Birth were both immediately questioned; then came the miracles of Christ… And finally they had emptied the Gospel of all its content; they were simply using the outward shell so that they go on collecting money from the people and the churches; because they knew that if the people in the pew knew that they were apostate, they’d throw them out. So the strategy was hang on to the trust funds; hang on to the money we’ve got; hang on the properties we control, and we will gradually educate the laymen into this new approach to theology.

And then finally we will take control of everything. The gradual process of feeding you theological poison until you become immunized enough so that you don’t know what’s happening to you. And when you wake up to what’s happening to you, it’s too late they’ve got everything. That is not a baseless charge, I stand prepared to prove that the Cult of Liberal Theology in the United States has deliberately and consistently followed this methodology to entrap, control and dominate the denominations and the churches of the United States and our educational institutions…

The major denominational structures in the United States today have pumped out all of the meaning of Christian terminology and have nothing but a hollow shell. And people are attracted by the shell because it’s the history and tradition of the Church. It’s not until they get in there that they find out that there aren’t sheep behind the pulpits there are wolves in sheep’s clothing who know not God and obey not the Gospel of Jesus Christ…

And finally they had emptied the Gospel of all its content; they were simply using the outward shell so that they go on collecting money from the people and the churches; because they knew that if the people in the pew knew that they were apostate, they’d throw them out.

Dr. Walter Martin (1928-1989)

I miss the great Walter Martin.  I saw him speak a few times in person, including a time there was a bomb threat and the event had to be postponed.  I am familiar with Harry Emerson Fosdick after reading “Bonhoeffer.”  I was surprised that such heretical teachings were being presented in American seminaries so early.  This short essay by Dr. Martin is a good explanation for why the “church” finds itself where it is in 2012.
